Gilbert Schmeiske

Obituary of Gilbert Louis Schmeiske

Gilbert (Gibby) L. Schmeiske, 93, of Port Charlotte, FL died Saturday, March 18, 2023 of natural causes.

Born October 16, 1929 in Rockville, CT to Frieda E. Moeller and Rudolph C. Schmeiske, he had been a resident of Port Charlotte for 16 years coming from Tolland, CT.  Gil was a devoted husband, father and lifelong friend to many.  Gil was married to Madolin Z. Cook for 48 years before her death in 2010.  Gil is pre-deceased by his parents; his sister Ethel Biggers and brother Kerwin Schmeiske of Rockville, CT.  He is survived by one daughter, Lisa Julius of Plymouth, MA; two sons, Keith (Sheri) Schmeiske of Tolland, CT; Gary (Helen) Schmeiske of Palm Coast, FL; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Gil took pride in his family and enjoyed the beach, water skiing, numerous outdoor activities and flying model airplanes throughout his life.  Gil enlisted in the US Navy in Feb 1955 and “toured” the Pacific as a radio operator on a destroyer as an inactive service member until his Honorable Discharge in January 1959.  He was a well respected general contractor and built many homes throughout Tolland and neighboring counties during his 40+ year career.  As he often said: “I have never had to advertise my business in the newspaper”.  He was naturally pleasant and would be deep into conversation within minutes of meeting someone new.

A memorial service will be held from 4 to 6pm on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at the Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, Englewood, FL with Pastor Dan Burlock officiating.
