Obituary of Lowel Earl Lewis

Lowel E. Lewis, 59, of Venice, Florida went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 22, 2021 while at work in Bradenton, Florida. He was employed by Safran Electrical and Power as an equipment operator. Born on August 9, 1962 in Detroit, Michigan, he had only been a Sarasota County resident for ten months, having moved to the area from Rochester Hills, Michigan. Lowel was raised in Detroit, Michigan, by his loving and faith-filled mother, affectionately known by all as, "Mama May." Her love and zeal for the Lord was lived out passionately in her everyday life, as she trained up Lowel to put his total faith and confidence in Jesus Christ alone. Lowel went to the Waldorf School of Detroit for his early education, which he credits for teaching him how to think critically. Those who knew Lowel well, knew that he often used the Socratic method when having a discussion on most any subject. This was how he was able to enter into dialogue and even debate others, while challenging them to better understand and articulate their own opinions and ideas. Lowel graduated from Catholic Central High School and was accepted to MIT, but chose to further his education at the University of Michigan. He remained there for three years when he decided he wasn't learning, but rather, "being taught to regurgitate information." His total and complete faith in God and love of the Lord, along with an entrepreneurial spirit, led him to venture out on his own. Lowel had an import and export business, and many other ventures, as well, but he considered all of it "as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord." Philippians 3:8 In 2012, he received a call from Archbishop Charles H. Dufour of Kingston, Jamaica, inviting him to come and help serve the people of his diocese. After much prayer and discernment, he and his beloved, Rose, answered the call of God, and left all behind to go serve in Jamaica. Lowel's heart burned for the people there, and his greatest joy was preaching The Word to the Jamaican people of 4 different parishes, and seeking to live out the Gospel message he had preached on Sunday with the people in their everyday lives. There were many long days spent traversing by truck the rough and rugged dirt trails, up and down the mountains of that region, while ministering to and fellowshipping with the people. After 2 ½ years, the Lord called Lowel back to Michigan and he continued, as he would say, "pressing forward." And this is how Lowel lived his entire life, pressing forward. "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:14 Lowel knew no other way but God's way. To some, it was foolishness, but to Lowel, it was his calling. (1 Corinthians 1:18). Wherever he went, whatever he did, his BIG SPIRIT touched everyone he met. From being an Uber driver in Detroit during the night shift, and often times ministering to drug addicts and prostitutes, to consulting on a highly technical business project with executives, or mentoring young black men in the inner city who had no father, Lowel brought Jesus into every situation. Many would reach out to Lowel when they were at their lowest. He was the light of Christ to so many. It's what he did. It's who he was. He will be greatly missed. "He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith. Now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to him on that day …and not only to him, but to all who longed for His appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Lowel was a member of Harvest Chapel of Venice. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of sixteen years, Rose Lewis, and many good and close friends. A life celebration of Lowel Lewis will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 10 Am at the Harvest Chapel of Venice, 101 Cortina Blvd. at Center Road, Venice, Florida 34285.
